Escuelita Rewind: Fostering a Welcoming Bilingual School Culture

In December, DC Bilingual was proud to welcome a group of educators from across Washington, DC—and beyond—for a learning visit focused on authentic dual-language instruction and bilingual school culture. Participants represented Global CitizensPCS, Houston Elementary School, Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy PCS, Shining Stars PCS, and Evergreen School, who traveled all the way from Hempstead, New York to learn alongside us.

During the visit, participants explored the intentional approaches DC Bilingual uses to deliver a high-quality bilingual education program—one that values and empowers teachers while holding high academic expectations for all students. Central to these conversations was how strong leadership and shared vision shape the trajectory of a bilingual program and contribute to a school culture that is welcoming, rigorous, and rooted in community.

After learning about DC Bilingual’s history and pivotal moments, participants experienced firsthand the three core components of our school’s mission that continue to strengthen our bilingual program:

  • High academic achievement in both English and Spanish
  • The development of student and adult leadership
  • A deep valuing of all cultures and identities

Educators had the opportunity to observe instruction in action, engage in meaningful conversations with teachers about high-quality professional development and growth opportunities, and learn how food, language, and cultural traditions are intentionally woven into daily life at DC Bilingual.

Participants left inspired by what they saw and eager to apply new ideas and practices in their own school communities. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our work, learn alongside fellow educators, and continue building a strong network committed to bilingual education that empowers students, families, and educators alike.
